From our stay in Playa del Carmen in Mexico we took an excursion to the Sian Ka'an nature reserve. You should definitely not miss this excursion when you are in Mexico!

On the way to the nature reserve you will pass through the boho paradise of Tulum, where you will immediately be immersed in a relaxed atmosphere. If we go to Mexico again, this will definitely be our favorite destination. A charming dirt road leads you past fantastic resorts, nice boutiques and the nicest bars and restaurants. Tulum offers a unique blend of luxury and bohemian charm, perfect for an unforgettable holiday.

If you continue on this road, it winds through lush jungle and past mangroves, with a variety of wildlife and unspoilt landscapes. Sian Ka'an means "where heaven was born" in the Mayan language, and the reserve lives up to this name with its breathtaking views and untouched nature. Crocodiles, sea turtles, dolphins and the most beautiful fish while snorkeling; you see it all. Finally you arrive in the small village of Punta Allen, where you will find crystal clear water and pristine beaches.

Unfortunately, this paradise faces a serious environmental problem: plastic pollution. There is a significant amount of plastic waste along the road to Sian Ka'an and on the beaches of the reserve. This plastic often comes from far away and is brought to the coast by ocean currents. It pollutes beaches and threatens the fragile ecosystem, including sea turtles, birds and fish that live in this region.

At this place it was the first time that we had to see plastic pollution and we were really in shock. We saw more plastic than sand on the obviously deserted beach.

Together they have saved millions of turtle hatchlings and removed thousands of kilos of plastic.
